The Western Balkans provides a unique, tailored and transformational educational experience to students from participating universities in the region, within the framework of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition (Vis Moot). In collaboration with local and international coaches, academics and experts from practice, the students are offered two intensive trainings for the written and oral advocacy stages of the competition, developing advanced skills, which are universally valuable and applicable in their academic and professional work. Some of the main benefits of the program include:

  • The development of skills in legal research, writing and analysis
  • In-depth learning about complex issues of procedure and substance in international trade law and international arbitration
  • Practicing legal pleadings before panels of experienced arbitration lawyers and arbitrators, with direct feedback and support
  • Opportunities to obtain valuable scholarships for graduate programs at leading universities around the world
  • Ample networking opportunities with peers, scholars and potential employers from leading law firms
  • Building lasting friendships with peers from the region and beyond and becoming a part of the global Vis Moot alumni network.

The Western Balkans Vis Moot Program is built around the schedule and phases of the Vis Moot competition. Each cycle starts with the publication of the Vis Moot problem in October each year and closes in April, following the Vis Moot finals in Vienna. The main activities of the Program include two in-person trainings (one for the written stage and one for the oral advocacy stage of the competition). In addition, the Program supports the implementation of the annual University of Zenica Pre-Moot, and the participation of the teams in regional Pre-Moot competitions. In addition, the oral advocacy training and Zenica Pre-Moot are followed by an international conference where leading experts discuss topics related to the Vis Moot problem.

The teams participating in the Western Balkans Vis Moot Program are responsible for their own individual preparations, guided by their coaches and advisors. However, the Program supports the teams throughout the preparations for the competition, including by connecting them to universities from around the world for practice rounds, and by providing feedback on initial drafts of written memoranda.

In order to be eligible for the Program, universities must have a team of at least two students and one coach, must register for the Vis Moot within the established deadline, and commit to full participation and contribution to the activities of the Program and the Vis Moot.

There are no participation fees for the Western Balkans Vis Moot Program. However, the teams are responsible for the registration fee for the Vis Moot competition and day-to-day costs and expenses of the team preparations.

Interested universities can register for the Western Balkans Vis Moot Program until October each year through the Program website here.

There are several ways to support or sponsor the program, the events, and the teams. Please contact us for more information.

The Vis Moot is the competition that takes place in Vienna every year in the week preceding the Catholic Easter. The decision to host the competition then is a strategic choice, since it is spring break at the University of Vienna and the premises are free to host the general and the elimination rounds. Pre-Moot are formalized friendly practice rounds that participating universities and sponsoring law firms and arbitral institutions organize between the submission of the Respondent Memo to the Vis Moot. In the Western Balkans, the notable Pre-Moots are the Zenica Pre-Moot in February and the Belgrade Pre-Moot in the week before the competition. Participation at Pre-Moots is optional, but strongly recommended as it enables networking with peers, teams, and supporting law firms and arbitral institutions.

The Commercial Law Development Program, using funding provided by the U.S. Department of State, proudly supports students competing in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. CLDP is a division of the United States Department of Commerce that helps achieve U.S. foreign policy goals in developing and post-conflict countries through commercial legal reforms. CLDP’s work to help countries increase compliance with international and bilateral trade obligations levels the playing field for U.S. businesses to compete. Simultaneously, CLDP serves as a technical assistance catalyst to help developing countries make the reforms they seek to modernize the laws and regulations that will lead to economic growth and opportunity.

CLDP supports students from universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo in participating in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (“Vis Moot”) to foster interest and experience in international commercial arbitration in the Western Balkans. The Vis Moot prepares students for an international legal career and provides opportunities for hands-on training in international legal research, persuasive legal writing, and oral argument. Education and participation in Vis Moot competition strengthens the international commercial law framework in the region, thereby fostering a sound business environment that promotes the U.S. economic interests and increases regional integration with Western markets.
