About the
Vis Moot.

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition is the biggest international arbitration competition, gathering teams from all over the world for a unique educational experience. The teams compete in a simulation of international commercial arbitration proceedings, based on a hypothetical international sales agreement. Each year, over 2500 law students from around 800 universities converge in Vienna for a transformational Vis Moot experience and all the surrounding events.

The competition includes a written stage where students prepare memoranda arguing their case for both sides of the dispute, and an oral advocacy stage, where they present their arguments before three-member arbitral tribunals.

In the process, the students learn about the key procedural and substantive international legal instruments governing cross-border transactions, primarily the UNCITRAL Model Law, UNCITRAL Rules of International Arbitration, The New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards and the UN Convention on the International Sales of Goods (CISG). Each year, the arbitration simulation is conducted under the rules of a different international arbitration institution.
